Day 3
And Elohim said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so.
Elohim called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And Elohim saw that it was good.
Then Elohim said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so.
The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And Elohim saw that it was good.
And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.
Three
Shelosh [f.], sheloshah [m.] Seeds, trees, fruit. Revelation, resurrection, gathering balance, equilibrium, pattern, counsel, witness, and strength. New life, sprouting, resurrection, fruitfulness, words of life (counsel), unity, and the foundation of the Temple/House are all signified by the number three. Three brings harmony and unity to opposites like one and two. Three creates a solid or a foundation and makes the first geometric shape (triangle). The sequence of three makes a chain of continuity: three patriarchs, three pilgrimage festivals, third day, three primary manifestations of the Godhead, three ply cord, three witnesses, three kings of united Israel, three primary missionary journeys of Shaul (Paul), three woes of judgement (Book of Revelation). In tradition, Moses ascended and descended Mount Sinai three times.
On the third day of creation, Elohim separated land and sea and caused dry land to appear. God also created vegetation on the third day. The creation must have begun to take on beauty and majesty. The creation of our world was done in an orderly fashion, leading up to its completion. Elohim was building a beautiful, healthy place that would eventually be ready for humanity.
Have you ever considered what the appearance of dry land would have involved? Mountains, valleys, boulders, springs, rivers, waterfalls, caves, beaches, gravel, clay, sand—the list goes on and on. Every time we take a step, we can remember the power of an awesome God.
With the formation of land, the water could begin the cycles of evaporation and condensation.
Not only was the creation of plants miraculous. It is a wonderful miracle of God that each living plant was created so that it could reproduce itself through seeds, pollination, etc. Think of all of the things associated with vegetation: roots, stems, leaves, grass, pollen, bark, vines, seaweed, fruits, vegetables, flowers, oxygen, etc. Think of the smells and colours that existed by the end of the third day.
There is often discussion as to whether or not the seven days of creation were literal days, as we know, twenty-four-hour days. One thought from the third day is that plants need the sun to survive. How many hours could they have survived until the sun was created on day four?
A Deeper Prayer for the Third Day of Creation
Heavenly Father,
We bow before You today in awe and wonder, humbled by the beauty of this new day You have given us. On this day, You spoke to the earth and commanded it to bring forth dry land, to rise up from the waters, and to be filled with every kind of grass, herb, plant, and tree—each one bearing its seed, a testament to Your boundless creativity and divine purpose. We thank You, Lord, for shaping the world in such a way that every element is intricately woven into the fabric of life, declaring Your glory and faithfulness.
Father, we stand in awe of Your wisdom in creating a world where every tree, every blade of grass, and every flower has its own unique design and function. You did not simply create for the sake of creation, but You made all things with intention, purpose, and a deep understanding of the needs of Your children. From the fruit-laden branches to the seeds that will take root and grow, You have provided for us in ways that surpass our comprehension. We give You thanks for the trees that bear their fruit in season, for the herbs that heal and nourish, and for the flowers that fill the earth with their fragrance. Each one a miracle, each one a song to Your glory.
Thank You, Lord, for the breath of life that You have placed within us, for the oxygen that You’ve woven into the fabric of the earth to sustain and renew us. How amazing it is, God, that the very air we breathe is a gift from Your hand, a reminder of Your love and provision. In the rhythm of each breath, may we remember that You are the giver of life, and that we are sustained by Your grace, moment by moment.
Today, as we reflect on the dry land You’ve formed, the rivers You’ve carved, the hills and valleys You’ve shaped, let us pause and marvel at the depths of Your creation. You have not just made a world to be inhabited, but a world to be experienced, a world that invites us to find You in every corner, in every shadow, in every sunrise and sunset. We pray that we would open our eyes and our hearts to see the beauty in the land, and that in doing so, we would see You more clearly. Let the hills and valleys speak of Your grandeur, let the rivers and waterfalls whisper of Your constant flow of grace.
Lord, just as You have planted the seeds in the earth and caused them to grow, we ask You to plant Your seeds of love, truth, and righteousness in the soil of our hearts today. Let them take root deeply within us, and let them grow to produce the fruit of Your Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, meekness, and self-control. We do not ask for this fruit merely for our own benefit, but for the glory of Your Name, that through us, others may come to know Your goodness and Your truth.
We pray, Father, that as we breathe in the fresh air You have created, You would revive our souls, awakening us to a deeper awareness of Your presence. May Your Spirit blow over us like the wind, breathing life into all that is dormant, all that is weary, and all that is dry. Stir within us a consciousness of Your nearness, that we may walk in the awareness that You are the Creator of all things, the One who formed us from the dust of the earth, and the One who longs to dwell in us, His creation, by Your Spirit.
May our roots go deep in You, Lord, as the trees of the field are rooted in the soil. Deepen our faith, deepen our love, deepen our understanding, that we might bear fruit that lasts, fruit that reflects Your nature and brings honor to Your name. Cultivate our hearts, Lord, that we might grow into the fullness of who You’ve called us to be, living in harmony with Your creation and fulfilling Your perfect will on this earth.
We bless You, King of Kings, the Maker and Sustainer of all things. How small we are before You, and yet You have called us to share in Your glory, to reflect Your image. We give You thanks and praise for Your eternal goodness and Your infinite love. All honor, all glory, and all praise belong to You alone. With hearts full of gratitude, we lift up our voices to You today and forevermore.
In Yeshua His Holy name,
Amen.
